Bartholomaeus Pitiscus (also Barthélemy or Bartholomeo; August 24, – August 24, ) was a 16th-century German trigonometrist, astronomer and theologian who first coined the word trigonometry.

Bartholomeo Pitiscus is known primarily for his coining of the term "trigonometry," which appeared in the title of his Trigonometria: sive de solutione triangulorum tractatus brevis et perspicuus (). The latter, which used all six trigonometric functions, became a highly respected.
The names “tangent” and “secant” that Pitiscus used proceeded from the Geometria rotund (Basel, 1583) by T. Finck; instead of “cosinus, Pitiscus wrote “sinus complementi.”. The second book is concerned with the things that must be known in order to solve triangles by means of the tables of sines, tangents, and secants.
